Case Study: Hazardous Substances in NZ.

One of the major failures of most business’s today is when to identify something as a business data issue. Case in point most managers will jump to trying to justify end processes before they have a good or even basic understanding of how their businesses data is performing. This is a common issue so don’t feel bad about it.

Legislative changes often force industry changes which some parties don’t think it warranted. This often leads to processes and systems designed to meet the bare minimum requirements instead of ones which look to use and leverage changes as an opportunity to add value to their products and services. No valuable customer wants to work with a supplier who cuts corners, most of all around health and safety.

Business DMS is currently working with a number of businesses around New Zealand to help them adapt to the Health and Safety Act (2015) which many companies have been caught on the wrong side of; particularly around the handling of hazardous substances. Most of their current systems and processes are failing to make the grade and they were facing harsh penalties and damage to their reputation. But as a partner Business DMS had been able to step in a show them a way forward where they can turn a cumbersome legal burden into a value-added asset for their staff and customers.

The key is defining value within the data and implementing it at every stage of the process to leverage engagement and benefit across the whole organisation. Each business is unique and special; with implementation and culture change every bit as important in the process as the software systems and functionality aspects.

Data is central to unlocking the potential of business in 2019. Many companies are jumping on board and securing their future in the digital economy. Change is happening quickly, but with partners in the space like Business DMS we can make strides forward together.

What is a Data-Centric Audit?

15/5/2019

At Business DMS we have been working over the last month to overhaul our businesses data-centric audit. For our clients (especially new ones) this is a key product we use to establish a baseline for their business. In our last post we talked about the R-AAA model, this is the first “A” – Audit. If you missed it see here.

It is so vital for any business to know where they stand, what strengths their past efforts have yielded and where there are still room for improvement.

Some businesses try to do this in-house, some use financial or commercial analysts but a growing number of organisations committed to being competitive are starting to focus on data-centric audits. This is the key for businesses because every business problem has a data solution.

Why focus on data? At its essence all business decisions are data decisions, the difference is how you process it. Traditionally we have left it to people (employees/contractors) to interpreted a business scenario and act accordingly. The outcomes are as varied as the individuals making them, because everyone is different.

Amazingly, business data is much the same, except once captured it is far easier, with the right skill set, to build models and answer questions with positive outcomes, often fast and cheaper than employing armies of workers. This is what we refer to is the “data digitisation”, taking your business information, storing, processing and recalling it in a way we can use it to leverage your business.

Our goal with the Data-centric audit is to discover what data you are capturing, what you need to work on and then how we can interpret this data before finally committing to an action which leads to a positive outcome.  The audit is the second step of this.

What the rest of the process looks like is a subject of another blog post, or maybe if you want to speed up the journey and get some more specific advice you can contact us directly below.
